Scientists find about a quarter million invisible microplastic particles in a liter of bottled water | PBS NewsHour

The average liter of bottled water has nearly a quarter million invisible pieces of ever so tiny nanoplastics, detected and categorized for the first time by a microscope using dual lasers.

Scientists long figured there were lots of these microscopic plastic pieces, but until researchers at Columbia and Rutgers universities did their calculations they never knew how many or what kind. Looking at five samples each of three common bottled water brands, researchers found particle levels ranged from 110,000 to 400,000 per liter, averaging at around 240,000 according to a study in Monday’s Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

These are particles that are less than a micron in size. There are 25,400 microns — also called micrometers because it is a millionth of a meter — in an inch. A human hair is about 83 microns wide.

Previous studies have looked at slightly bigger microplastics that range from the visible 5 millimeters, less than a quarter of an inch, to one micron. About 10 to 100 times more nanoplastics than microplastics were discovered in bottled water, the study found.  ...

I grabbed the ladder (its legs are green, anyway), stuck it in the living room near the bay windows, draped it w/a string of white LED lights with faceted “strawberry” covers, managed to put up the little pressed tin angel, then put some of our figurines on it.

Here’s the top of our Christmas “tree”

The 70s thin pressed tin angel is silver, bright gold, and psychedelic pink and blue. She dances whenever the heat comes on, turning this way and that. She did that on our actual tree two yrs ago, and I hated to put her away. Instead I put her up on the wire baker’s rack in the kitchen, where she'd dance whenever the heat comes on, turning this way and that.

The Anubis statue was a gift from our IRL pal Keith.

The weeping angel is my BF’s.

The Godzilla-esque chap on the L came directly from Japan, where a friend bought it for my BF. He wondered if it came from a movie or tv show, and Little Audrey said there was no info with it where she bought it. Lo and behold, the first Ultra Man episode either of us had watched since the 70s - on yout00b - featured the very same beastie as the villain! The big fella on the R is a new gift for my BF from my BFF Sue.

Oh, and you can tell we’ve got a green porch light bulb if you look at the window, next to Anubis.  It stayed on all day b/c Christmas.
